Tetraodontidae is a family of estuarine and marine fish from the order Tetraodontiformes .. The morphology , similar fish that are included in this family are similar to porcupine fish that have large areas of the spine ( vertebrae Tetraodontidae unlike the thinner , hidden , and can be seen when the fish is puffing up ) . The scientific name refers to the four large teeth attached to the upper and lower jaws are used to crush shells of crustaceans and mollusks , their natural prey . Puffer fish are generally believed to be the second most poisonous vertebrate in the world after the Golden Poison Frog . Internal organs such as the liver and sometimes their skin are highly toxic to some animals if eaten , but some species of fish meat is used as food in Japan ( called河豚, pronounced fugu ) , Korea ( called bok ) , and China ( called河豚he2 tun2 ) and prepared by chefs who know which body part is safe to eat and how many levels .
